Dragon Boat Festival 2017
Several times a year, when we feel like it, the Golden Journal brings Gold Club members a set of extras for their Avalanche Press games. Our 22nd issue looks at the conversion of British and American battle cruiser hulls into aircraft carriers, with 10 “long” ship pieces and 20 aircraft pieces (so you have some planes to fly off of all those new decks).
Life is incomplete without a Dragon Boat of your very own.
The Dragon Boat Festival is an annual event in China, taking place on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar (late May or early June in the West). The festival includes drinking realgar wine, eating rice dumplings and of course launching dragon boats. We have some brand-new ships for your gaming table; you’ll have to supply the dumplings and wine yourself.
Britain’s Royal Navy converted the hulls of three “light battle cruisers” into aircraft carriers: Courageous, Glorious and Furious. Three other battle cruisers served in their original configuration: Repulse, Renown and Hood. Much larger ships than the light battle cruisers, they would have operated a much more powerful air group had they been converted into aircraft carriers instead.
Aircraft carriers are pretty vulnerable when alone – German battle cruisers sank Glorious – and needed escorts against both surface and air attack. So our set also has the original light battle cruisers in their surface combatant guise, as modernized for a new war.
The United States Navy converted two of their Lexington-class battle cruisers into aircraft carriers and scrapped the other four of the class. The Washington Naval Limitations Agreement limited each power to 66,000 tons’ worth of such conversions, allowing the Americans to convert two of the big ships and the British to re-build three of their smaller battle cruisers. In our set, you get the others, too: Constitution, Constellation, Ranger and United States. Because you need them.
The Dragon Boat Festival 2017 Golden Journal also includes a couple of new Bismarck/Plan Z scenarios for you to use your new carriers and battle cruisers . We’re only printing a small number of these and when they’re gone, they’re gone forever - we don’t want to keep Journals in stock long-term. We already gave members a second chance at the two previous Journals, so this time we really mean it. If you want your special dragon boats, sign up now.
