Imperium, 3rd Millennium:
Worlds In The Balance

In 1977, Marc W. Miller designed one of most popular board wargames ever published, Imperium. It introduced a number of game concepts that would influence dozens of subsequent games. Avalanche Press brought out a new edition in 2001, with superb graphics and updated rules.

In Imperium, war breaks out between humans from Earth and their close cousins from the stars. A Terran expedition to Barnard’s Star meets representatives from a vast interstellar Imperium, and when the Earthlings refuse to submit to alien rule (or assume their proper subordinate place, depending on your point of view), interstellar war is the result.

Imperium Galactic Map

Imperium is a game of interstellar conquest. The Galactic Map displays the stars around Terra, which are linked by “jump routes.” While ships can crawl directly from star to star, this is a very slow process and almost all movement is along the jump routes.

The Lagash System

Solar systems are the currency of Imperium. Players fight to control habitable worlds, which yield rich resources. They can also obtain resources from other planets, but not in as great a quantity. These resources are necessary to build, repair and maintain ships and ground forces. The Imperial player also obtains resources from the central government, but these come with strings attached.

Fleets move along jump routes from system to system and fight enemy fleets. When enemy ships are cleared from a system, ground forces can land to seize the planets there.

The game is all a question of glory. Players gain glory by winning battles and capturing enemy worlds, with the greater glory winning the scenario. In the extended campaign game, the Terran player wins by capturing the three Imperial provincial capital worlds on the map, the Imperial player by taking Sol and Alpha Centauri.
