The Turkish Black Sea Fleet:
Scenarios, Part Two
By Jim Stear
May 2014
Note: The Turkish Black Sea Fleet appeared in the New Year’s 2014 Golden Journal, a tiny special and very irregular publication exclusively for Gold Club members. These scenarios by Jim "Captain Terror" Stear make use of those ship pieces. We hope you enjoy them.
Operational Scenario Three
Black Sea Nightmare
November 1918
Allied fears of the Tsar’s Black Sea ships showing up in the Mediterranean under Central Powers control were ultimately not realized. While the Germans did manage to take control of several ships left at Sevastopol including the battleship Imperator Alexander III (which made a cruise under German control in October), the poor condition of what ships were seized precluded their use before the Armistice. If instead, the Russian collapse and surrender had come earlier (perhaps July 1917, after the failed Kerensky Offensive), and the balance of the ships had fallen into the hands of the Kaiser and his allies, Allied nightmares of this force loose in the Eastern Mediterranean might have become reality, with the ships refitted, re-armed, manned by Turkish crews and where appropriate directed by German officers.
Note: This scenario requires pieces and maps from Mediterranean, and pieces and rules from Jutland.

Special Rules
Ports: The Allied player has the use of all British, French, Italian and Greek ports. The Italian port of Rhodes is in Z 53, not Y 54. Valleta (Z 30) and Port Said (JJ 60) are major British ports; Alexandria (JJ 56) is a minor British port. The Central Powers player has the use of all Turkish and Austro-Hungarian ports. Ships may only re-arm (and replenish bombardment ammunition) at a major port of their own nationality, except as noted below. All other ports are neutral and may not be entered or used.
Allied Supply Bases: Allied ships may draw an unlimited amount of fuel from any port of their same nationality. Any Allied ship may draw an unlimited amount of fuel from major Allied ports, Corfu (S 40), Suda Bay (BB 47), Mudros (S 49), Piraeus (W 47), Salonika (P 45), Larnaka (CC 64) and Port Said (JJ 60). British and French ships also may re-arm at Corfu, Suda Bay, Mudros, Piraeus, and Salonika.
Central Powers Supply Bases: Central Powers ships may draw an unlimited amount of fuel from Constantinople (O 56), Smyrna (U 52) or any Austro-Hungarian port; at any other Turkish port, only one box may be drawn per turn. Turkish ships may only re-arm at Constantinople and Smyrna.
Restricted Waters: No Allied ships may enter the Turkish Strait except sea zone R 50. No ships may enter the Black Sea.
Release: Austro-Hungarian ships may not be assigned missions until a fleet with Turkish ships has been sighted by Allied forces, or until a Central Powers port zone has been entered or bombarded. Italian ships may not be assigned missions until a fleet with Austro-Hungarian ships has been sighted by Allied forces, or until an Italian port zone has been entered or bombarded.
Fleets: The Allied player may have up to seven fleets, and the Central Powers player five; each side may have up to two decoys.
Turkish Training: With the exception of BC01 Yavuz and CL00 Midilli, all Turkish gunnery and torpedo hits must be confirmed by a second roll of four or higher. BC01 and CL00 are treated as italicized for gunnery purposes.
French and Italian Readiness: All French and Italian gunnery and torpedo hits must be confirmed by a second die roll result of 3 or greater.
Old Tub: Treat B02 Torgud Reis as a CD for movement purposes, a ship having just one primary box for gunnery range purposes, and with light armor where heavy armor is indicated.
Guns of Terror: Each warship on a bombardment mission may conduct up to two bombardments of enemy ports before reloading. In bombardment, primary guns score a hit on a result of 5 or 6, and secondary guns on a result of 6.
Naval Aviation: Use the Sequence of Play and Air Operations Rules (20.0) from Jutland, along with the British pieces for the S.184(c) and Sopwith Baby (s).
Victory Conditions
The Central Powers player scores one VP for each bombardment hit scored against Greek ports (to a maximum of five per port), two VPs for each bombardment hit against all other enemy minor ports (to a maximum of 10 per port), and four VPs for each bombardment hit against enemy major ports (to a maximum of 20 per port). The Central Powers player also scores one VP for each turn at least one fleet with at least one ship with primary guns occupies an Allied port zone. The Allied player scores one VP for each bombardment hit scored against enemy minor ports (to a maximum of five per port) and two VPs for each bombardment hit scored against enemy major ports (to a maximum of 10 per port). The Allied player also scores one VP for each turn during which at least one fleet with at least one ship with primary guns occupies a Central Powers port zone or sea zone R 50. To win, a player must score at least 30 VPs, and have more VPs than his or her opponent; any other result is a draw.
