Rhineland 1936

In March 1936, nineteen German battalions entered the Rhineland, officially forbidden to the German military since 1919. The world awaited a French response, which never came. The opportunity to crush an evil regime in its early days slipped away.
Golden Journal No. 70: Rhineland 1936 is a Panzer Grenadier expansion based on this war that never happened. We describe the reasons France could not easily react to the provocation: the French Army was configured for a mass-levy war like that of 1914-1918. The “active” divisions were training organizations, and in springtime, as the Germans well knew, they were filled with raw conscripts in their first days of service. Any intervention relied on the handful of colonial regiments stationed in France for this purpose: Moroccans and North Africans. Most popular histories overlook this crucial fact and portray the French decision as a moment of weakness that allowed Fascism to flourish. But like most such moments, the issue was not so simple.
  
Rhineland 1936 includes 24 new pieces, depicting the German Army of 1936. At this point, it’s still armed with the leftover weapons of the Great War, hidden away under haystacks since 1919, like M08 Maxim-style machine guns and 77mm field guns. Armor is limited to the Kfz13 scout cars built by the old Reichswehr in defiance of the Versailles Treaty.
The ”French” troops opposing them are the 3rd Moroccan Tirailleurs – the only regiment on the frontier ready for combat in March 1936. They’re tough, long-service professionals, completely out-numbered by the Germans, who for their part are not really ready for prime time.
