Winter Storm
Battles along the River Chir, 1942

On 23 November 1942, Soviet offensive spearheads met up west of Stalingrad, isolating the German Sixth Army and about 330,000 Axis troops. Germany’s Supreme Leader forbade a breakout attempt, and on 10 December the Fourth Panzer Army and 48th Panzer Corps began Operation Winter Storm, a counter-offensive intended to relieve the trapped Sixth Army.

The operation failed. The strongest German formation, 11th Panzer Division, had to move southward to contain a Soviet attack along the Chir River. The Germans got no closer than 48 kilometers to the Sixth Army’s westernmost positions, and by 24 December they were in full retreat.

Winter Storm is a full-sized Panzer Grenadier game based on these battles, both the relief attempt and the fighting along the River Chir. It comes with 517 playing pieces (die-cut and silky-smooth), four new maps and 41 new scenarios.
