Galicia 1914
 The enormous battles fought in the latter half of 1914 on the dusty (and later snow-covered) plains of Galicia, the southern region of Poland ruled by Austria-Hungary, would determine the fate of Europe for the next century and longer. Overlooked even at the time, the outcome of this pivotal campaign resonates more than a century later in the barbaric Russian assault on democratic Ukraine.
Galicia 1914 is a historical study of these campaigns, from the opening salvoes of August 1914 through the December 1914 Battle of Limanowa, the last victory won solely by Austro-Hungarian arms. It’s a story of courage and horror, as the old empires of Eastern Europe destroyed themselves and called it “victory.”
The campaign began with a series of four large battles waged right along the frontier, as four Austro-Hungarian armies crashed into four Russian armies. On the left, the Austrians won both battles, though at a tremendous cost in casualties. That only encouraged Austro-Hungarian Chief of Staff Franz Conrad von Hötzendorff to continue flinging men into head-on assaults that ravaged the old Imperial and Royal Army’s regiments within days. On the right wing, the Russians pushed back their opposite numbers, capturing the provincial capital of Lemberg (modern Lviv) and surrounding the mighty fortress of Przemyśl.
The armies surged back and forth for the rest of the year, but by December, the Russians had secured most of the province and entered the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. With their enemies close to the breaking point, it seemed only a matter of time before they broke through the mountain passes and into Hungary. But then came the timely Austrian offensive at Limanowa, that blunted the Russian advance and saved the Empire, at least for a few more years.
